Blog #1 Laptop Chromebooks
This blog is all about the tool widely used in many classrooms today called Laptop Chrome books, found in Dr. Wang’s PowerPoint. Laptop Chromebooks are individual laptops that some school districts provide for each student to help enhance the learning of each student and their ability to teach despite circumstances. These are bought by the school and can be rented out to each student without the cost of the student for the school year or for some school districts until they graduate.
Since 2012 these have opened up a whole new way of teaching that over 40 million educators are taking advantage of that can be more individualized, more consistent, more convenient, and enhances students’ learning because of all of the technologies able to be used for learning certain skills on the laptops. When an entire class receives laptops, it eliminates the financial gap of students (if any) and provides access to mastering important skills learned on a computer that will aid their endeavors in the future. Even if you can't afford to have one for your entire classroom, they are very easy to share because each student has their own google login information which makes it perfect for centers, free time, or scheduled uses throughout the week.
Chromebooks can essentially transform ordinary lessons into engaging, individualized, and perfect for different learning styles. It can also be great for organizing information, classwork, and scheduling out the week or month where students can view it. Especially for the last 2 years, sites like google classroom have allowed students to access files to work on digitally through their Chromebooks when they are forced to be home along with attending class through zoom making school work during a pandemic and unfortunate circumstances.
In my experience, both of my siblings in high school were given a Chromebook and helped them get their work done at home if they needed it and didn’t have to depend on our parents bringing their computers home or using mine. In the elementary school, I am placed in, all students from kindergarten to fifth grade get to use Chromebooks that stay in the classroom all year. In the fourth grade classroom, I am in frequently, Chromebooks have allowed a completely new type of teaching. We use many different websites and technologies on Chromebooks that enhance learning. Students have google classroom that was explained above that allows them to access files, documents, assignments, and see what they need to do if they have to stay home because of Covid. Students throughout the school use the curriculum called “I-Ready” where they have 45 minutes of reading and math to complete each week on the Chromebooks where students get to practice these skills in fun and engaging ways. Students can access fun games that promote learning like Prodigy, Epic, and Dojo. They get to practice computer skills helpful for their future like using PowerPoint, word documents, creating digital presentations with research, and learning typing skills.
When considering the framework I have seen this used during the Assessment part of the TLC framework. There are many formative assessment opportunities using the Chromebooks where they each get individualized assessments or practice working on a concept or skill that is engaging like on the computers. It is also very helpful in the 7 events of instruction including stimulating recall where students could perform fun engaging surveys using Kahoot. Chromebooks can be used for any subject, but I think it would be the most helpful for reading and writing.

Hi Kylie,
ReplyDeleteI may have mentioned this in one of my blog posts, but at my high school, for the first three years each classroom had a set of chromebooks. It was really nice to have them in the classroom, but we were not able to take them home so for some students, they had no way to complete work outside of school. My senior year our school got a grant to get us each our own that we were responsible for and could take home each day. We had to pay a small fee just for insurance if we chose, but that was the only cost for us. We just had to return them to the school before graduation. It made organizing all our school work really easy and allowed students who may not have a computer at home still get work done.
Hi Kylie!
ReplyDeleteI remember when I was in school and how often chrome books were being used. I remember in my English classes and the days we would use chrome books to type essays or do research. Students were not able to take them home due to liable reasons. It did give students opportunities to do their homework as well for other classes, especially for those who may not have internet at home. I think that chrome books can be used for many different things and can be versatile. It as well allowed students to use zoom as you mentioned. I like that your post was very informational about chrome books and the different uses.
