Blog #8: Generation Genius
Generation Genius
Generation Genius is a website that provides a wide variety of science and math lessons for grades k-8 that I learned about from my mentor teacher. It has pre-made lessons and experiments with step-by-step directions on how to teach or introduce it. All of their science content encourages hands-on, Inquiry-based learning across all of the science NGSS and common core standards. There are also 5-20 minute long videos that teach and reinforce certain concepts depending on the topic and grade level.
Eaze of Use/ Versatility
It is very organized and easy to find what you want to teach for your desired grade level. First, you select if you want math or science lessons and then explore by topic, grade, or scroll through the options to find what you are looking for. It provides the lesson plan, directions, assessment, vocabulary, teacher guide, online quiz game, and an exit ticket pre-made. Although it is very easy to use once you have logged in, it is unfortunately not free. Usually, your school can buy a subscription that allows all of the teachers to access the information or you can buy it individually for yourself. The prices vary depending on if it is for just math or science or both, along with if it is for your self, your school, or your school district.
My Experience
From my experience, my mentor teacher uses this a lot for science because it includes everything you need and is high-quality lessons that encourage deeper thinking and inquiry. I have used one of their lessons and taught it for a few days in my placement when we were going over Weathering. The students loved participating in all of the hands-on centers and really engaged the students in higher-level thinking in the later discussion we had.
Hi Kylie,
ReplyDeleteI am excited to learn about Generation Genius. That is really awesome that Generation Genius has lots of math and science activities with pre-made lessons and step-by-step instructions. This will definitely cut the planning time for teachers in half! I really like how there are videos that will reinforce the content that is being taught. I think some topics in math and science are difficult for students to comprehend so that is really great there are videos that are helping to support them. I like how you have tried this website out before and it was successful, that is great to know! I agree that Generation Genius connects to the "7 Events Framework" for presenting the content since there are lessons embedded within this technology. Great post and thanks for sharing about this technology!
